Customer Service in Residential and Day Programs

October 7, 2010

9:30am -12:30pm

This presentation will focus on the environment in which the service provider addresses the individual needs of each consumer and their family is changing rapidly.  The self-directed approach of consumers selecting providers creates an atmosphere of “competition” throughout the provider network.  Many times the only difference between two different providers will be their attention to detail and their ability to uniquely focus on the needs of the client in a professional and appealing manner.  This workshop will address the basic approach to providing a “customer friendly environment” along with suggestions for a coordinated plan of action that is applicable to every residential facility or day program environment.

Teaching, Engagement, and Care Giving; A Continuum of Interaction by Staff in Residential and Day Pr

Monday, October 18, 2010

9:30am-12:30pm

This workshop will review the concept of "normalization" and the interpretation of clients rights vs. responsibilities as it relates to creating expectations and opportunities for individual growth in residential and day settings.  An understanding of the continuum of support offered to individuals with developmental disabilities will suggest that more effort be placed on the "art and science" of engagement and teaching rather than on basic care giving.

LONELINESS KILLS-FRIENDSHIP SAVES: STRATEGIES TO OVERCOME THE DISABILITIES OF POVERTY AND LONELINES

September 27, 2010 9:30am-4:00pm

This presentation will offer an alternative that is simple to understand but may be the most challenging thing that professionals have ever attempted to do in their careers. It is simple because we utilize these techniques everyday in our own lives. It is difficult because it may require a fundamental change in the way in which we define our jobs, our success, and outcomes.

The ultimate goal is for professionals to become “invisible” support and to have everyday citizens move to the forefront and embrace individuals with disabilities as their fellow citizens.

IF IT’S MY LIFE,, IT MUST BE MY PLAN: THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN PERSON -CENTERED PLANNNG AND SYSTEM

 September 28, 2010 9:30am-4:00pm

This presentation will challenge participants to rethink the current approach to planning for persons with disabilities.  Whether it is called an IP, ISP, PFP or any other planning process, it cannot be driven by the system’s need for funding compliance and program accountability, if it is to be truly person-centered.   This presentation will involve participants in re-evaluating the current tools that are used in the planning process.  Learning styles, alternative formats, and who controls the process all are determinants of what type of planning process this truly is.    The limits and possibilities of existing approaches will be explored in detail.  Participants will be asked to change the planning approach for at least one individual they support to be truly person-centered rather than system-centered.   This workshop is presented by Derrick Dufresne, Senior Policy Associate Center for Self Determination.
