Petition to End the Waiting Lists for Persons with Developmental Disabilities in New Jersey
Monday, 31 March 2008

END THE WAIT NOW!

In the state of New Jersey, there are 8,087 people with developmental disabilities on the Waiting Lists for Community Services through the Division of Developmental Disabilities.  This number is in addition to the 2,457 people with developmental disabilities who are ready to move into the community out of developmental centers.  People with developmental disabilities are not being treated with equal human rights, equal civil rights, equal disability rights, or with equal access to opportunities to better living within New Jersey. The group behind the Petition to End the Waiting List crisis in New Jersey is comprised of concerned advocates, families and people with developmental disabilities.  Our goal is to end devastating waiting lists for community services and supports for people with developmental disabilities and their families.  We want to build a responsive system that has the capacity to provide services in a timely fashion to all persons with developmental disabilities needing and requiring services and supports.  If you are a person with a developmental disability who is currently on a waiting list for community services through the Division of Developmental Disabilities, a concerned family member, advocate or citizen, please sign the petition on the back of this flyer.  The petition will be given to Governor Corzine and Legislative Leadership to call on them to provide adequate services to people with developmental disabilities to live in the community now.

We can only do this, and finally put an end to the Waiting List crisis, with your help.  Thank you for your support and dedication to improving the lives of people with developmental disabilities around the state of New Jersey.

Letter to Governor Corzine
Thursday, 07 February 2008
I am writing on behalf of the New Jersey Association of Community Providers, an agency of approximately 100 community based providers serving 35,000 individuals with developmental disabilities and brain injuries. Our organizations are the framework and foundation that enable individuals with developmental disabilities and brain injuries to lead productive, engaged lives in the community at a cost below the cost of institutional care.  Many of the people we serve have complex needs and require services and supports 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
